Project Spotlight: Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project

Garcia Roofing Gives Back: A FORTIFIED Roof for a Houma Veteran
At Garcia Roofing, we believe in community and service. That’s why we were honored to participate in the Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project in March 2025. Through a valuable partnership with Rebuilding Together Bayou, we had the privilege of providing a new, high-quality roof for a local veteran in Houma, Louisiana. This project allowed us to give back to someone who has served our country, ensuring their home is safe and secure for years to come.
A Partnership Built on Purpose
This project was a collaborative effort. Working alongside Rebuilding Together Bayou, we joined the Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project, a nationwide initiative that provides new roofs to veterans in need. This partnership combines national resources with local expertise, allowing us to make a significant impact right here in our community. We are proud to lend our skills and resources to such a worthy cause and support our nation’s heroes.
More Than Just a Roof Replacement
When our team arrived on-site at 3305 Stephanie Street in Houma, we discovered the project was more complex than it first appeared. The home had a metal roof, but beneath it lay an entire layer of old shingles that also needed to be removed. This required a complete tear-off of both roofing systems to create a clean, solid foundation for the new installation.
Scope of the Project
Our primary goal was to install a new roofing system built to FORTIFIED specifications, providing superior protection against harsh weather. The veteran selected Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration Architectural Shingles in a beautiful Chateau Green color.
Our comprehensive work included:
- Complete Tear-Off: We removed and disposed of the existing metal roof and the underlying layer of shingles and decking.
- New Shingle Installation: We installed a new Owens Corning Duration shingle roof system with all manufacturer-required components and proper ridge vents.
- Flat Roof System: A new CertainTeed Flintlastic flat roofing system in Moiré Black was installed, including a new ply base, cap sheet, and primer.
- Component Replacement: We replaced multiple heater stacks and pipe boots, ensuring every part of the roof was new and sealed correctly.
- Finishing Touches: Finally, we installed a new 26-gauge drip edge in black around the flat roofing system for a clean finish.
The FORTIFIED Difference
What makes this project special is the upgrade to a FORTIFIED Roof™. This standard of building goes far beyond conventional methods to create a stronger, more resilient roof.
Key differences in our installation process included:
- Deck Re-nailing: We re-nailed the roof decking with ring shank nails, using a specific pattern (4 inches on center near edges, 6 inches elsewhere) for enhanced durability.
- Sealed Roof Deck: We used a double-layer underlayment, Tri-Built Ice and Water shield, to seal the gaps between decking panels, a critical step for water resistance.
- Secure Edges: The drip edge and flashing were installed over the underlayment, and a self-adhesive starter strip was used to create a more powerful seal against wind and rain.
- Enhanced Nailing: Following the Garcia and FORTIFIED standard, we used a six-nail-per-shingle pattern, significantly improving the roof’s wind resistance compared to the typical four-nail pattern.
Through this project, we provided more than just a roof. We delivered peace of mind. By building to FORTIFIED standards, we’ve given this deserving veteran a home that is better prepared to withstand Louisiana’s unpredictable weather. We are grateful for the opportunity to serve those who have served us.
